Matt Blunt today visited Excelsior Springs to help celebrate their downtown’s potential. The city is one of only ten to be the first inducted into the governor’s DREAM (Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri) Initiative. “This is an exciting time for Excelsior Springs as the community works towards its dream to enhance development and growth and attract new jobs downtown,” Blunt said. “As I visit Missouri’s first DREAM communities, I continue to be impressed by the DREAM Initiative’s potential to support and create new opportunities for our diverse and historic downtowns and for our state.” The DREAM Initiative will work to help Excelsior Springs enhance its downtown and focus on its history to attract tourists. It provides selected communities streamlined access to available programs for infrastructure improvements, historic preservation, affordable housing, community services, business development and job creation. The initiative also offers exclusive training and seminars created to help all DREAM applicants learn more about how to access existing redevelopment programs and tools to revitalize Missouri’s historic and diverse downtowns. | General Info |
| The history of Excelsior Springs
Excelsior Springs owes its existence to a natural spring at the edge of a pretty river near the western border of what is now Fishing River Township, Clay County, Missouri.
Discovered by accident, Travis Mellion, a farmer, is credited with the discovery of Siloam Spring's medicinal value. According to history, the event happened in 1880 when the valley was still covered by a wheat field. Jas. L. Farris, an attorney from Richmond, with some friends, was camped near where Siloam Spring is located while hunting and fishing in the area.
In 1880 the natural spring was dubbed ”America's Haven of Health". An entire industry grew out of the rumored medicinal value of the mineral waters and their miraculous healing qualities. Rapid growth soon followed and the town grew at an alarming rate. Frequented by Presidents, Gangsters, Stars and Dignitaries, the town's reputation became legendary. Excelsior Springs offers an interesting and eclectic mix of shopping districts, history, eating establishments and cultural opportunities.
Historically, Excelsior Springs meant excellence in tourism and health. Visitors flocked to Excelsior Springs health spas, clinics, hotels, restaurants and entertainment establishments. Promoted nation, and world-wide, Excelsior Springs became a premiere destination for health and relaxation.
The Elms Hotel was a favorite haunt of the infamous Al Capone. Former president Harry Truman also enjoyed the Elms and its European-style spa. Truman stayed at the Elms on the night of his victory over Thomas Dewey in the 1948 presidential election.
Although mineral water lost it’s allure in the 1960's, the mineral waters are still available inside the Hall of Waters, the mineral water baths can still be "taken" locally and much of the historic fabric of the original town can been seen in a revitalized downtown shopping district.
